The Criminal Investigation Division, commanded by Major Brandon Tayes and Lieutenant Roger Cooper, is responsible for the investigation of all crimes involving property, crimes against persons and other crimes that are brought to the attention of the division. Crimes including, but not limited to, burglaries, thefts, assaults, homicides and drug related crimes.
The primary function of the Criminal Investigation Division is to conduct follow-up investigations of criminal offenses resulting in the eventual identification, apprehension, and successful prosecution of criminal offenders. The Criminal Investigation Division handles all criminal cases for the Sheriff’s Office, including general and other specialized investigations involving narcotics and gang related activity.
The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Section remains committed to combating street level narcotics and vice-related crimes. Drugs are the catalyst for the largest portion of criminal activity that occurs in our community. Prostitution, robbery, burglary, home invasion, carjacking, and even homicides more often than not have a connection with the use, sale, or purchase of illegal drugs.
In addition, we have investigators assigned to various task forces that we work closely with such as the 13th Judicial District Drug Task Force, the FBI Violent Crimes Task Force and the U.S. Marshal’s Fugitive Task Force. Another specialized unit under Criminal Investigations is our Child Abuse Investigation Unit, which investigates child abuse and sexual exploitation of children crimes as well as criminal activity involving juveniles. The Division also oversees investigation of crimes involving the elderly in our community.
